MITCHELL, S.D. – The 2015 Culver’s DWU Classic is set for Saturday, Feb. 14 at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, S.D., and will bring together some of the top teams in Class A and B for an exciting day of high school basketball.
With eight total games, including nine local teams and other top squads from around the state, this year’s edition of the event promises to be one of the best in its history. The marquee matchups of the day include a pairing of the top two ranked teams in Class A, while three of the top five in Class B will also be in action.
“The DWU Classic is shaping up to be a premier event with great matchups throughout the day, highlighted by some of the top Class A and B teams from South Dakota,” DWU Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach and DWU Classic Assistant Director Brad Bartscher said.
There will be two entrances into the Corn Palace, with the south side open near the court and through City Hall on the north side of the building. Ticket takers will be available at both entrances. Admission to the DWU Classic includes all eight games and seating is general admission. There will be courtside seating available and those interested can call the Corn Palace for more details. Game times are subject to change as play progresses throughout the day.
The event tips off at 10 a.m. with Sully Buttes (4-8) taking on Bridgewater-Emery (7-5) in the opening game in a Class B matchup, followed by a clash between Class A Parkston (8-6) and Class B Chester Area (9-5) at 11:30 a.m..
Following a matchup between local Class B teams Canistota (9-4) and Corsica/Stickney (11-4) at 1 p.m., Class A’s Mount Vernon/Plankinton (8-5) and Class B’s Hitchcock-Tulare (8-5) tip off at 2:30 p.m. McCook Central/Montrose (8-5) and Gregory (9-4) take to the court for a matchup of local teams at 4 p.m.
The first matchup of raked teams is set to get started at 5:30 p.m. when the top two teams in Class A face off. No. 1 Aberdeen Roncalli (14-0) and No. 2 Dell Rapids (11-1) could give a glimpse of what’s to come at the Class A state tournament in this pairing.
Two of the top teams in Class B are up next with No. 2 Langford Area (12-1 and No. 4 Sanborn Central/Woonsocket (9-5). The event closes with No. 5 Hanson (13-1) and White River (11-2), which is receiving votes in the latest South Dakota Sportswriter’s Association Class B Poll.
